Celebrating our Staff

Each year Gaining Ground hosts a lunch for staff and farmers to recognize them for the work they do every day for our recipients. While the setup was very different this year, the sentiment remained the same.

The lunch was kicked off with Executive Director Jennifer Johnson thanking the staff and farmers for their adaptability and professionalism during a growing season that has been like no other. With no volunteers on the farm, everyone rose to the challenge and we’re on track to meet our target of 125,000 pounds this season.

Farm Manager Doug Wolcik followed with his heartfelt thanks and appreciation. His affection for the crew and the pride in the tremendous job they have done was clearly evident.

Lunch is typically a family-style affair with platters of food being passed around. This year was different (isn’t everything?), but still lovely. The pavilion was arranged with picnic tables and bouquets of sunflowers. To accommodate social distancing, a tent was also set up to allow 6 feet between diners.

The healthy, tasty food was from Saltbox Kitchen, packaged handsomely in individual lunch boxes. Each farmer was presented with a cloth wrapped Gaining Ground cookbook and recently published history of the farm to remind them of this unique year at Gaining Ground. If interested in obtaining a copy of either of these books, please contact office@gainingground.org.
